Strengths

A very capable DMR mobile: tri-band (2 m + 220 + 70 cm), DMR + analog simultaneous, GPS + APRS, and Bluetooth. It has a 1.77 in color TFT, 4000 channels, 200-500K contacts, real VFO (important for amateur use), full duplex, digital roaming, AM airband, and cross-band repeat. It is Part 90 certified (dual-band), with a free a dealer training course and a dealer support.

Weaknesses

Programming is complex (CPS with a learning curve). Firmware updates require updating both the radio and the BT-01. Multiple model variants cause confusion (Pro vs Plus vs III). 220 MHz is 5 W only. No System Fusion or D-STAR (DMR only). Premium-priced for a DMR mobile. It weighs ~1200 g.

Verdict

A capable amateur DMR mobile. The AT-D578UVIII Pro/Plus puts tri-band DMR+analog, GPS, APRS, Bluetooth, and 4000 channels into a mobile radio with real VFO operation. Little else in the amateur market matches this feature density at this price. The learning curve is real, but a dealer's free training course helps. If your area has DMR infrastructure, it is a strong mobile choice.

The AnyTone AT-D578UVIII Pro is a flagship amateur DMR mobile radio, widely regarded as one of the most capable digital mobiles in the hobby. Its digital mode is DMR (Tier I and II), which is not D-STAR and not C4FM. It also does analog FM. It is actually a tri-band radio, transmitting on 2 meters, 1.25 meters (220 MHz), and 70 centimeters, and requires an FCC Technician-class license or higher to transmit; it is not a GMRS or license-free radio.

The spec sheet is long: 50 watts on VHF (45 on UHF), a 1.77-inch color display, built-in Bluetooth (including a wireless PTT), GPS for APRS position reporting, DMR roaming, cross-band repeat, dual receive, and capacity for 4,000 channels and the full worldwide DMR contact database. Its main downside is a famously complex programming software with a steep learning curve. A newer "Plus" variant adds aviation-band receive and analog APRS.

It is current and a top pick for amateur DMR. For a D-STAR mobile (a different digital standard), see the Icom ID-4100A; for a budget DMR mobile, the TYT MD-9600.
