Why you need this

Every amateur radio manufacturer uses a different microphone connector. They all look similar — 8-pin round plugs — but the pinouts are completely different. An Icom mic plugged into a Yaesu radio will not work and may damage the radio.

This is the #1 compatibility question in amateur radio: "what adapter do I need?"

Heil adapter cables

Heil Sound microphones use XLR connectors on the headset end and require a radio-specific adapter cable. Current Heil part numbers: AD-1-I (Icom 8-pin round), AD-1-IM (Icom modular), AD-1-Y (Yaesu 8-pin round), AD-1-YM (Yaesu modular), AD-1-K (Kenwood/Elecraft 8-pin round), AD-1-KM (Kenwood modular), AD-1-KX3 (Elecraft KX2/KX3 TRRS), and AD-1-C (Collins/Drake 3-pin).

Yaesu round vs modular — check your specific model

Yaesu has used BOTH connector types for decades, and the split does not follow age. The compact/portable line uses the 8-pin RJ-45 modular jack (FT-817/818, FT-857D, FT-897D, FT-891, FT-991A, FT-450D — going back to the FT-900 in the mid-1990s), and the split continues in the current line: the FTDX10 and FT-710 use the modular jack (their SSM-75E mic has an RJ-45 plug), while the FTDX101D/MP uses the traditional 8-pin round jack (SSM-75G). The suffix matters: SSM-75E is the modular version, SSM-75G the round one. So an FTDX101 mic will NOT plug into an FTDX10, and vice versa. Always check your model before ordering a mic or adapter.
