A professional CB evolved from the Cobra 29 LTD Classic that has been an industry standard for decades. The Radio Check Diagnostic (RF power, SWR, battery voltage) is specific to the 29 LX and useful for monitoring system health. It has NOAA weather with auto-scan and emergency alert. Switchable ANL and NB reduce engine noise and electrical interference, and Dynamike Boost helps full modulation. It includes a 4-color selectable LCD, channel scan, SWR calibration, a clock/timer/alarm, Talk Back, and tactile controls.
The original 29 LX is AM only, with no single sideband; note that current production has split into an AM-only unit and a newer AM/FM version (the 29 LX AM/FM). It is premium-priced for a CB (varies by version), and at 4.5 lb it is heavy. The LCD can be hard to read in direct sun, and the included microphone is the usual weak point that many owners replace.
A full-featured professional CB. The Cobra 29 has been a default trucker CB for decades. The LX variant adds a 4-color LCD, NOAA weather with auto-scan/alert, a Radio Check Diagnostic, channel scan, and a clock, features the 29 LTD Classic lacked. For one CB for professional use, the 29 LX is a common choice.
The Cobra 29 chassis is the closest thing CB radio has to an institution. The full-size 29 has been the default professional and trucker set for decades, and the 29 LX is the version that brought it a modern face: a selectable four-color LCD, in place of the classic analog meter, that you can set to green, blue, amber, or red to match a dashboard. Underneath the display it is still a 40-channel, four-watt set built on the familiar 29 LTD platform, which means the decades of antennas, mounts, microphones, and known modifications all carry straight over.
The headline feature is the Radio Check diagnostic, a built-in readout of your transmit power, your antenna's SWR, and the vehicle's battery voltage, the three things a CB operator most often wants to check and usually needs separate meters for. Around it the 29 LX layers the controls a serious user expects: NOAA weather with an automatic alert scan, RF gain, a Dynamike microphone-gain boost, switchable noise blanker and automatic noise limiter, delta tune, talkback so you can hear your own modulation, a dimmer, instant 9 and 19, and a clock with an alarm. Notably, despite the long feature list, it does not include SoundTracker, that noise-reduction system lives on Cobra's "ST" models, not on the 29 LX.
One point worth knowing in 2026: the 29 LX line has split. The original 29 LX is an AM-only radio, and that is what most of the used and sell-through market still is. But after Cobra's petition led the FCC to legalize FM on CB in 2021, the company updated the current-production version (sold from 2023 as the 29 LX AM/FM) to add FM alongside AM. Neither version offers single sideband. So if FM matters to you, check exactly which 29 LX a listing is describing.
It is a heavier, pricier radio than the compact sets, and the stock microphone is the usual weak point that owners often upgrade, but as a do-everything mobile CB the 29 LX earns its long reputation. For drivers who do not need the full-size chassis, Cobra's compact 18 WX ST II covers weather and noise reduction in a smaller box, and the bare 19 DX IV covers the basics for less.
