Strengths

Flagship-class hybrid SDR performance at mid-range pricing. The FTDX10 runs the same hybrid SDR architecture as the FTDX101D: a narrow-band SDR with three roofing filters plus direct sampling for the 3DSS spectrum display. RMDR 116 dB+ and BDR 141 dB+ are very strong figures. It has a 5 in touchscreen with 3DSS, DVI-D monitor output, a built-in USB audio codec, and a PSK31/RTTY/CW decoder. There are 15 bandpass filters, a 250 MHz HRDDS synthesizer (-145 dB phase noise), a 3-stage parametric EQ, an SD card, and mouse/keyboard control via USB-A, all in a 5.9 kg package.

Weaknesses

Single receiver — no dual watch or simultaneous dual receive (the FTDX101D has this). Ethernet NOT built-in (requires optional SCU-LAN10). Smaller than the FTDX101D's 7" display. 300 Hz CW roofing filter is optional ($$$). No VHF/UHF. Some operators find the hybrid architecture less intuitive than the IC-7300's pure direct sampling. Menu system is deep. Heavier than the FT-710 (5.9 kg vs ~4.5 kg).

Verdict

A strong mid-range Yaesu SDR. The FTDX10 delivers much of the FTDX101D's performance — the same hybrid SDR architecture, roofing filters, and HRDDS — at roughly half the price and in a smaller package. For operators who do not need dual receivers, it offers flagship-class receive performance with a 5 in touchscreen, DVI-D monitor output, and built-in digital-mode support. A close IC-7300 competitor with measurably stronger receive specs.

The Yaesu FTDX10 is a compact 100-watt HF and 6-meter transceiver that brings the receiver of Yaesu's flagship down into a mid-priced, small-footprint package. It uses the same hybrid SDR architecture as the top-of-the-line FTDX101: the signal is down-converted to a 9 MHz intermediate frequency and passed through narrow crystal roofing filters before a software-defined back end, while a separate direct-sampling receiver drives the spectrum display. That roofing-filter front end is what gives it its standout close-in performance.

And the performance is the headline. On Sherwood Engineering's respected receiver rankings the FTDX10 sits near the very top - effectively second only to the FTDX101 flagship - with third-order dynamic range around 107 dB. For contesting or any crowded band, that ability to pull a weak signal out from next to a strong one is exactly what matters. It is paired with a 5-inch color touchscreen and Yaesu's 3D spectrum display, a built-in antenna tuner, a built-in USB sound card for digital modes, and a DVI-D output for an external monitor.

It is not perfect. It has a single receiver (no dual-watch like the FTDX101), the 300 Hz CW roofing filter is a paid option, network and remote operation need an add-on module, and reviewers note that the waterfall blanks during transmit, the tuner is slow, and the controls are cramped. There is also no VHF/UHF - it is an HF-and-6-meter radio.

Its closest relative is the cheaper FT-710, which posts the same headline receiver number using a simpler direct-sampling design and a smaller screen; the FTDX10 adds the roofing filters, the bigger 5-inch display, and a more substantial feel for several hundred dollars more. Against the popular Icom IC-7300 it is the stronger receiver. It is one of the best receivers you can buy without stepping up to a flagship.
