Strengths

The medium-heavy-duty Yaesu rotator for serious antenna systems. ~24 sq ft wind load and 6,000 kg-cm braking torque handle TH-11DX class antennas, stacked tribanders, and multi-element Yagis. 98 dual-stacked ball bearings distribute load over the full housing diameter — no shaft hole on top means excellent water resistance. DC motor eliminates AC starting capacitor failures. Variable speed (40-100 sec/360°). Preset control for hands-free operation. Factory-lubricated for maintenance-free operation. Its K-factor of 230 slots between the G-800DXA (180) and the G-2800DXA (950).

Weaknesses

Must be mounted inside a tower on an accessory shelf at least 1 meter below the top — not for mast-top mounting. 6-conductor control cable must be properly sized for the run length. 3-minute maximum continuous duty — long rotation sequences must be interrupted. 1° backlash. Premium-priced new. The G-2800DXA provides 4× the K-Factor for operators with extremely large antenna systems. Controller is 120V AC only.

Verdict

A medium-heavy-duty Yaesu rotator for serious antenna systems. The G-1000DXA sits in the middle of Yaesu's lineup: enough torque and wind-load capacity for large HF antennas without the weight and cost of the G-2800DXA. The 98-bearing design, DC motor, and sealed housing give the reliability tower-mounted equipment needs. For most contest stations running a single large Yagi or stacked tribander, it is a sensible choice.

The Yaesu G-1000DXA is the middle-heavy member of Yaesu's azimuth antenna-rotator family - the motor-and-controller system that turns a beam antenna to point where you want it. It is rated for about 2.2 square meters (roughly 24 square feet) of antenna wind load, which makes it the popular choice for a full-size HF tribander or a multi-element monoband Yagi: big enough for most serious stations, without the bulk and cost of the largest model.

Like its DXA siblings it turns a full 450 degrees - a complete circle plus a 90-degree overlap, so you choose where the north (or south) stop falls - at a speed you set from 40 to 100 seconds, and it has the feature that defines the DXA line: a preset control. You set the outer ring of the controller to the bearing you want, press start, and the rotator drives there and stops on its own, which is a real convenience during a contest. The controller can also be driven by a computer through Yaesu's optional GS-232 interface for software antenna pointing.

The rotator itself is built to live in the weather: a die-cast housing with no shaft hole in the top to let water in, riding on dozens of ball bearings that spread the load across its full diameter. It is designed to mount inside a tower on a shelf rather than at the very top of a mast, and - as with any rotator - a separate thrust bearing to carry the antenna's weight is strongly recommended.

It sits between the lighter G-800DXA and the heavy-duty G-2800DXA; choose among them by your antenna's wind-load area. For most single-Yagi or stacked-tribander stations the G-1000DXA is the sensible middle ground, which is why it is the most common rotator in the range.
