DMR setup guide

Step-by-step DMR setup — from DMR ID registration to first contact.

What is DMR

DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) is a digital voice standard originally designed for commercial radio. Amateur operators adopted it because DMR radios became affordable and the digital voice quality is excellent. DMR uses time-division multiplexing to carry two voice conversations on a single 12.5 kHz channel.

What you need

  1. A DMR radio. AnyTone AT-D878UVII Plus ($150) is the most popular. TYT MD-380 ($60) is the budget option. Radioddity GD-77 ($60) with OpenGD77 firmware is the hackable option.
  2. A DMR ID. Register at radioid.net to get your unique DMR identification number. This is free and takes 1-3 days.
  3. A code plug. The programming file that tells your radio about talk groups, repeaters, and contacts. Think of it as a configuration file.
  4. A DMR repeater or hotspot.

The code plug

A code plug contains:

  • Channels: Frequencies for each repeater or hotspot, with the correct time slot and color code
  • Talk groups: Numbered groups that route your audio to specific destinations (local, regional, worldwide, specific countries or languages)
  • Contacts: The DMR ID database so your radio displays callsigns instead of numbers
  • Zones: Organized groups of channels (by area, by repeater, by network)

Where to get a code plug:

  • Your local DMR repeater operator or club often provides a pre-built code plug
  • AnyTone users: the AnyTone Facebook group shares community code plugs
  • Build your own using the manufacturer's CPS (Customer Programming Software)

Talk groups

Talk groups are how DMR routes audio. When you transmit on a talk group, everyone listening to that talk group hears you. Common talk groups:

Hotspots

A hotspot is a low-power personal DMR access point that connects your DMR radio to the internet-linked DMR network from your home. You do not need a local DMR repeater if you have a hotspot.

Popular hotspots:

  • MMDVM (Pi-Star): A Raspberry Pi with an MMDVM board. $50-100. The most popular hotspot platform.
  • SharkRF openSPOT: A standalone hotspot that does not require a Raspberry Pi. $150-250. Easier setup.
  • Duplex boards: Allow simultaneous TX and RX on two time slots. $80-120 for the board plus a Raspberry Pi.

Getting started step by step

  1. Register for a DMR ID at radioid.net
  2. Buy a DMR radio (AnyTone D878UVII Plus recommended)
  3. Download the manufacturer's CPS software
  4. Find or download a code plug for your area
  5. Program the radio using the CPS
  6. Find a local DMR repeater (repeaterbook.com) or set up a hotspot
  7. Key up on a talk group and say your callsign

The learning curve

DMR has the steepest learning curve in amateur radio. The code plug concept, talk group routing, time slots, color codes, and CPS programming are foreign to operators accustomed to analog FM. Expect to spend an evening learning the concepts and another evening programming the radio. After that, DMR operation is straightforward.
