Tower and antenna safety guide
Climbing safety, installation guidelines, and when to hire a professional for amateur radio tower and antenna work.
Safety warning: Tower climbing without proper training and equipment is dangerous. If you are not trained and equipped, hire a professional.
The rule
If you are not trained, equipped, and experienced in tower climbing, hire a professional. Amateur radio tower work kills people. Falls from towers and antenna structures are the leading cause of death in the amateur radio hobby. This guide covers safety principles, but reading a guide does not make you a trained climber.
Ground-level antenna work
Most amateur radio antennas can be installed without climbing anything:
- Wire antennas: Use a throw line and weight to get wire over tree branches. No climbing.
- Tilt-over masts: Push-up or tilt-over masts allow antenna installation at ground level before raising the mast.
- Ground-mounted verticals: Install at ground level. No height work.
- Roof-mount tripods: Accessible from a ladder on a single-story roof. Use proper ladder safety.
When tower climbing is needed
Lattice towers (Rohn 25G, 45G, 55G), self-supporting towers, and crank-up towers require climbing for antenna installation, maintenance, and repair.
Required equipment
- Full-body harness (not a belt — belts allow you to bend backward and fall out)
- Positioning lanyard (allows hands-free work while secured to the tower)
- Fall arrest system (separate from positioning — catches you if you fall)
- Hard hat
- Proper footwear (steel-toe boots with defined heel for rung grip)
- Tool lanyard (dropped tools kill people on the ground)
- Ground crew (never climb alone — someone must be on the ground)
The three-point rule
Maintain three points of contact with the tower at all times: two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand. Never move more than one limb at a time. Attach your positioning lanyard before releasing your hands for work.
Hiring a professional
For any work above 30 feet, or any work you are not confident performing safely, hire a professional tower crew. The cost of a professional installation ($500-2000 for a typical amateur antenna job) is a fraction of the cost of a fall.
Finding tower crews:
- Ask your local amateur radio club for recommendations
- Check with commercial tower companies (they often do amateur work on weekends)
- Contest station owners in your area know tower crews
- ARRL section managers can often provide referrals
Electrical hazards
Power lines
Never install an antenna where it could contact power lines if it falls. This includes the antenna, guy wires, coax, and mast. The distance should be at least twice the height of the antenna structure. Contact between an antenna and power lines is almost always fatal.
Lightning
All tower installations should include a lightning protection system: ground rods bonded to the tower base, lightning arrestors on all coax lines entering the building, and a single-point ground panel where cables enter the structure. See the grounding guide for details.
Permits and regulations
Most jurisdictions require a building permit for tower installations. Zoning regulations may restrict tower height. HOAs may prohibit towers entirely (though FCC PRB-1 provides some protection for amateur radio antennas). Check local regulations before purchasing a tower.
