Strengths

The supply that made switching respectable in RF environments: light enough to carry one-handed, quiet enough for weak-signal receive once the noise-offset knob does its trick, and equipped like a small DC distribution panel - lighter socket, snap-ins, and big terminals all live. Thirty continuous amps runs any 100 W transceiver with headroom, and twenty years of owner reviews document boring reliability.

Weaknesses

Switching hash is managed, not absent - the offset knob relocates birdies rather than deleting them, and the RF-sensitive will still hear it on a bad day. The variable knob's front placement invites accidental nudges (the preset exists for a reason), fan noise arrives under load, and the repair record's one recurring story - both main MOSFETs failing together under sustained overload - says treat the 30 A rating as a rating, not a dare.

Verdict

The default answer to 'what power supply?': cheap enough to not think about, clean enough for DX, flexible enough to wire the whole desk. Linears are quieter in principle; nobody who bought this is listening to the difference.

The DM-330 series is the power supply that converted ham radio to switching technology, and it managed the conversion with one knob: the front-panel noise offset. Switching supplies had always been smaller and lighter than the iron-transformer linears they challenged - this one delivers 30 continuous amps (32 peak, in its North-American MVT form; the European MVE rates 25) at a variable 5 to 15 volts from a two-kilogram box - a quarter of what the equivalent linear weighs - but they hummed with switching birdies that landed, by Murphy's law, exactly on the weak signal of the evening. Alinco's answer - the patented 'Noise-Offset' circuit, the maker's own name for it - was to make the switching frequency adjustable: hear a birdie, turn the knob, watch it slide off frequency. Objection answered, market converted.

The rest of the design is bench-organizer thinking: high-current terminals for the transceiver, a 10-amp cigarette-lighter socket for mobile gear visiting the desk, and two pairs of 5-amp snap-in terminals for accessories - plus a preset function that snaps the variable output back to exactly 13.8 volts after experiments. Ripple under 15 millivolts peak-to-peak and regulation under 2 percent keep the receive chain honest, the protection set (current limit, short circuit, over-temperature) keeps mistakes survivable, and the backlit meter keeps the status visible across the shack.

Two decades of production (the MVT is the current 120 V variant, the MVE its 230 V export twin; the newer FX adds USB ports but loosens the ripple spec threefold and surrenders the 5-to-9-volt bottom range - not the one for noise-sensitive HF ears) and a long review record of mostly unremarkable reliability - the documented exception being a cascading MOSFET-plus-driver failure under sustained overload, the repair blogs' standard diagnosis - have made it the default first supply and the default recommendation - at a dealer price that ends most comparison shopping. Its natural companions are the radios it powers and the connector standard most owners eventually wire it into; its linear-supply rivals like the classic iron benchmark still hold the absolute-quiet crown at three times the weight, which is precisely the trade this box exists to win.
