The rare standard that actually standardized: genderless mating ends the adapter problem, the shared housing ends the gauge problem, and the ARES-arrangement convention means your power cable works at the EOC, the Field Day site, and the stranger's shack. Contact quality is genuinely excellent - silver-plated, self-wiping, milliohm-class - and the parts cost approximately nothing.
Unlatched friction retention is the design's one debate: vibration-heavy mobile installs want the optional retention pins or clamps, and cheap clone housings mate sloppily with genuine ones. Crimping rewards the proper tool (pliers-crimped contacts are the failure mode), and the color-arrangement standard only protects those who follow it - check polarity at unfamiliar stations anyway.
Not really a product review - a citizenship requirement: wire your 12-volt world in Powerpoles, in the standard arrangement, with a real crimper, and every piece of DC gear you'll ever own becomes interoperable. The cost of entry is pocket change; the cost of abstaining is an adapter bag.
The Anderson Powerpole is amateur radio's most successful standard, and its genius is the absence of a feature: gender. Every Powerpole housing is identical - there is no male and female, no plug and socket - so every Powerpole mates with every other Powerpole, and the entire category of 'wrong end of the cable' disappears. One polycarbonate shell accepts three contact sizes - 15 amps for 20-16 AWG, 30 for 16-12, 45 for 14-10 - the silver-plated flat contacts wipe themselves clean on every connection and settle at 600 micro-ohms on the official 30-amp measurement, and the dovetailed housings snap together into multi-pole blocks - most famously the red-black pair that carries 13.8 volts across the hobby.
That pair's arrangement is the actual standard: ARES, RACES, and the emergency-communications world settled on one orientation - red on the right, contact tongue on top, viewed from the CONTACT (mating) face - a detail worth stating precisely because at least one venerable county RACES document phrases the identical arrangement as 'red left, tongue down' from the same view, and polarity mnemonics are exactly where precision earns its keep - so that any compliant radio plugs into any compliant power source at any incident, Field Day, or stranger's shack. The convention turned a good connector into infrastructure: power supplies ship with Powerpole outputs, rigs grow Powerpole pigtails, and DC distribution strips speak nothing else. The engineering honesty list is short: retention is friction (vibration installs add the maker's own hardware - the 110G68 retention clip is the recommended piece, over the traditional roll pin), clone housings mate sloppily with genuine ones, and the crimp wants a proper tool - the pliers-squashed contact is the ecosystem's one recurring failure.
Anderson Power Products dates to 1876 Boston (Sterling, Massachusetts today, under Ideal Industries ownership since 2001) - the Powerpole family descends from the bigger SB-series connectors the company supplied to forklift and telecom fleets before hams adopted the small one - and the ham-market channel built the surrounding ecosystem of kits, crimpers, and distribution gear. The natural companions in this catalog are the power supplies everyone rewires with it and the linear classics whose screw terminals it civilizes. Few purchases under a dollar change a station more.
