Strengths

Yaesu's flagship, ranked at or near the top of the Sherwood Engineering receiver test list. BDR 150 dB+ and RMDR 123 dB+ are among the best figures recorded for a production amateur transceiver. It has dual independent SDR receivers and a VC-Tune preselector with a precision stepper motor for -70 dB out-of-band rejection. A 7 in touchscreen shows up to 1 MHz of 3DSS waterfall. There are 4 antenna inputs plus a dedicated RX input, a 400 MHz HRDDS, CW full break-in (QSK), a built-in USB audio codec, decoders, parametric EQ, voice memory, DVI-D monitor output, an MPVD dual-function VFO knob, and RF/IF outputs for external processing.

Weaknesses

12 kg and 420×130×320 mm — this is a large, heavy desktop radio. Flagship pricing for the D model, with the MP well above it. Requires user-provided 13.8V DC power supply (101D does not include PSU). Optional roofing filters and VC-Tune for SUB require factory installation by Yaesu (paid factory labor per item). The touchscreen coexists with traditional controls, creating a learning curve. Some operators find the spectrum display less responsive than the IC-7610. No VHF/UHF. The MP model's 200W requires the included SPS-101 power supply.

Verdict

A top-tier receive performer. The FTDX101D ranks at or near the top of the Sherwood Engineering receiver test list. Its hybrid SDR architecture with VC-Tune preselector, 400 MHz HRDDS, and roofing filters achieves receive performance that few radios in any price range match. The dual receivers, 4 antenna inputs, and RF/IF outputs make it a complete contest and DX station. For operators who want the best receive performance Yaesu offers and will pay for it, it is the answer.

The Yaesu FTDX101D is Yaesu's flagship HF and 6-meter transceiver, and as of 2026 it sits at the very top of Sherwood Engineering's respected receiver-performance table - the best-measuring production amateur receiver Sherwood lists. If raw ability to hear a weak signal next to a strong one is what you are after, this is the radio that defines it.

Like the smaller FTDX10 it is a hybrid SDR - the signal is down-converted to a 9 MHz IF and passed through crystal roofing filters before the software-defined back end, with a separate direct-sampling receiver driving the spectrum display - but the 101D adds the things that make a flagship: two fully independent receivers for listening on two frequencies at once, a precision motor-driven "VC-Tune" preselector that sharpens the front end, three antenna ports, and a large 7-inch touchscreen with Yaesu's 3D spectrum display. It runs 100 watts (the 200-watt version is the FTDX101MP, which adds a built-in power supply).

It is a serious piece of equipment in every sense: about 12 kilograms, a wide desktop footprint, and a flagship price (the 101D needs a separate 13.8-volt supply). The optional narrower roofing filters and the second receiver's VC-Tune must be installed at the factory, and the deep menus and touchscreen take learning.

Its closest sibling is the cheaper single-receiver FTDX10, which gets within a few decibels of the 101D's receiver numbers for less than half the price; the obvious cross-shop is Icom's dual-receiver IC-7610, which many find easier to operate but which measures a notch below on close-in dynamic range. For a contester or serious DXer who wants Yaesu's best receiver and dual-receive in one box, the FTDX101D is the answer.
